Counselor Education History
Program History: The Counselor Education program began in 1966. It was called the "Counseling and Guidance" program, reflecting its school counseling roots. The University of Alabama was included in the initial National Defense of Education Act (NDEA) funding during the 1960s. NDEA funding was made available after the USSR launched the satellite, Sputnik, into space. With the emphasis on math and science careers, and a race for technological advances, the need for trained counselors in the schools increased drastically. This NDEA initiative led to the establishment of many counseling programs at universities, including the Counselor Education program at UA. The original master’s and doctoral degrees were in School Counseling and Student Personnel Administration in 1966. Three years later, in 1969, the Rehabilitation Counseling was established.
